The Psychoanalysis, Society and Culture program at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis (BGSP), seeks to realize the mission of BGSP: “to provide a deep understanding of human nature.” Combining psychoanalysis with sociological and cultural studies, it provides a valuable perspective on current and historical social and psychological issues as well as on the development of psychoanalysis itself. This event presents important applications to research, administration and clinical work in a variety of settings.
Presenters:
Manuel Harpin, MA is a Boston-based psychotherapist. He works in community mental health as an outpatient clinician and Psychosis Treatment Specialist. He received his BA from Sarah Lawrence College and MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from BGSP. Mr. Harpin is currently a doctoral student in Psychoanalysis, Society, and Culture Program. He worked as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Sociology at Tufts University and was most recently a panelist at the National Institute for Psychotherapies in New York City. Mr. Harpin’s clinical practice centers abolitionist perspectives.
Jean Claude Noel, MS, MA is founder of Atrium Consulting LLC in New York. As Senior Associate at the Kets de Vries Institute (London), he focuses on Senior Executive and Board level coaching and consulting interventions. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees at BGSP and a member of the accreditation review team at Brussels-based EQUIS. In his role as Community Advisory Board member and Community-Scientist at Mount Sinai Hospital Tisch Cancer Institute in New York, he focuses on psychosocial aspects of cancer with the objective to reduce disparities in access to cancer care. Since 2007, he volunteers with cancer patients at Mount Sinai Hospital Ruttenberg Treatment Center. He led Executive Education leadership development programs as Adjunct Clinical Professor at INSEAD (Fontainebleau, Abu Dhabi, Singapore) with Entrepreneurship/Family Enterprise and Organizational Behavior as academic areas. He was involved in the Global Leadership Fellows Program at the World Economic Forum and directed their program at INSEAD. He is a member of the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations (ISPSO), and the McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School Institute of Coaching. He has a corporate background on the board of global organizations including Hilton International (VP Western Europe and Africa and Senior VP The Americas), TNT Express Worldwide (Senior VP Asia Pacific/Middle East-Africa and The Americas as well as Corporate VP Mergers and Acquisitions for TNT Post Group) and Christie's International PLC as Group COO. In these various capacities he held overall business responsibility for large business units and was CEO of various entities. He obtained the HEC Master in Consulting and Coaching with Honors and the International Diploma in Consulting and Coaching for Change (Clinical Organizational Psychology) from INSEAD. He graduated from BGSP with the MA in Psychoanalysis, Society and Culture. He has completed and pursues specialized CE courses at Harvard Medical School, on cancer related subjects such as Cancer Survivorship and Cancer Equity. He also completed the inaugural Community Scientist Institute course at City College of New York.
Sadeq Rahimi, MSc, PhD is a professor, researcher, and clinician. He is a faculty member in the Psychoanalysis, Society and Culture Program at BGSP, lecturer and research associate in Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and a psychotherapist in private practice. He received his PhD in Transcultural Psychiatry at McGill University, followed by postdoctoral fellowships in Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and in Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard Center for Middle Eastern Studies. Dr. Rahimi’s research and publications have focused on culture and subjectivity, including schizophrenia and culture, political subjectivity, radicalization, and virtual subjectivity. In his 2015 book, Meaning, Madness and Political Subjectivity (Routledge), he explored the subjective experience of schizophrenia as embedded and shaped by culture, politics, and history; and his recent book, The Hauntology of Everyday Life (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021) examines mechanisms of production of desire and transmission of political affect through language and culture.
Objectives:

2. Identify and discuss three elements of how the study of culture may influence research, administration and/or clinical work.
3. Identify and discuss three elements of the study of society may influence research, administration and or clinical work.
